MINIMAL / THE PLAIN TEMPLATE

Plain.
The essentials, well considered.

THE DESIGN THINKING

A clear hierarchy.
A deliberate first impression.

All meaning is carried by text, headings, and spacing. The simple structure provides a useful starting point when you need to inspect the reading order carefully.

Best suited to
Applications that call for a simple document
Content sequence
Profile → Experience → Skills → Education

Keep contact details brief and section names conventional. Put a short list of relevant skills after the evidence that demonstrates them.
One thing to check
Follow the requested file type and inspect the actual exported document for intact text and a clear reading order.

WHEN TO CHOOSE PLAIN

Choose the layout for the story you need to tell.

Plain uses text, spacing and familiar headings as its main organizing tools. It is a sensible starting point when the application calls for a simple document or you want to inspect the reading order easily. Follow the application instructions and inspect the file you export. Keep names, dates and bullets consistently grouped, and check the exact exported file. If a role becomes a dense paragraph, split it into distinct contributions; a plain layout still needs editorial decisions about emphasis and length.

01

An employer asking for a simple document

Plain offers a straightforward starting point when the instructions prioritize a conventional format. Read the actual requirements before editing. The website can save text and open the browser print dialog; it does not generate a DOCX file simply because the layout resembles a word-processing document.

02

A careful text-order review

The single-column structure makes it easier to inspect how the professional history reads from top to bottom. Check the exported file rather than assuming the preview determines every receiving system’s behavior. Dates, titles, and section headings should remain understandable when the decorative context is absent.

03

A base version for several focused applications

Plain can hold a stable factual record while you change emphasis for different vacancies. Keep titles and dates consistent across versions. Tailor the summary and selected contributions rather than rewriting the employment history, and use clear filenames so the correct version is sent.

A FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

An administrator follows the application instructions

In this fictional scenario, Jules is applying for an administrative role that requests a simple resume and a particular file type. The first draft uses elaborate labels and a long objective. Jules chooses Plain, replaces the objective with a concise focus, and writes a concrete records example. The final file is then checked against the employer’s instructions rather than assumed acceptable because it looks conventional.

THE STARTING POINT

Organized professional seeking an opportunity to use many skills.

A MORE USEFUL VERSION

Administrative assistant experienced in maintaining meeting records, checking document versions, and following up on missing inputs before scheduled reviews.

The revised opening identifies relevant work without decorative language. It gives the experience section a clear argument to support. Plain helps Jules inspect that argument as text, but the file still needs to meet the requested submission requirements. If a different editable format is required, the saved text can be used in an appropriate document editor instead of treating the website’s print action as a universal export solution.

FROM SAMPLE TO YOUR RESUME

Give every section a clear job.

01

Read the submission requirements first

Note the requested file type, naming instructions, and any document constraints before filling the template. These requirements can determine the final workflow. Avoid spending time perfecting a visual version that cannot be submitted in the format the employer has explicitly requested.

02

Use conventional labels and accurate facts

Keep the professional focus, employment details, skills, and education easy to recognize. Explain unusual internal titles through the experience rather than replacing headings with creative names. Plain depends on the wording and spacing to make the document useful, so clarity of labels has practical value.

03

Inspect the file you will actually send

Save the content, review the print or document output, and check that the final filename identifies the correct application version. Open the file independently and verify contact details and page breaks. A clean preview is helpful, but the attachment itself is what the recipient will receive.

THE FINAL EDIT

Keep the design working for your content.

01

Treating simplicity as a universal screening promise

A single column gives the document a straightforward reading path; inspect that path in the exported file. Follow instructions and inspect the actual text. Avoid adding an invented compatibility score or claiming that a particular layout ensures selection.

02

Removing useful context along with decoration

Minimal design does not require skeletal bullets. A role still needs enough information to explain the setting, contribution, and result. Keep context that changes the meaning of a claim, and remove repetition or irrelevant detail rather than reducing every sentence to a few vague words.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Questions about Plain.

Does Plain create a Word document?

The website offers a text copy and browser printing, including Save as PDF where available. It does not create DOCX files. If the employer requires DOCX, use an appropriate document workflow and review that final file separately.

Should I remove my professional summary?

Use a concise summary when it adds a relevant direction or context. Remove it if it only repeats generic qualities or the obvious job title. Plain can support a useful introduction without needing a long objective to fill space.

Can I keep a Plain version alongside another layout?

Yes. Keep the underlying facts consistent and name versions clearly. A restrained version may suit a particular submission instruction, while another layout may work for direct sharing. Review each final file rather than assuming identical output.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Handle an application that asks for text in a form

Fictional practice case: Ivo is applying to the fictional Willow Records Office. The form asks for employment history in text fields and accepts an optional resume attachment. He has prepared Plain, but needs to ensure that both versions tell the same factual story.

  1. 01

Treat the fields as a separate reading context

Paste each role into the requested field and preserve the title, employer, dates, and meaningful contribution. Do not assume the attachment will explain missing context in a form the reviewer may read independently.

  2. 02

Use the layout as a source of clarity

Plain's familiar headings and single reading column make it straightforward to identify each section. Keep that structure when reviewing the attachment, but remove formatting characters that become distracting when pasted into a text-only field.

  3. 03

    Follow the actual instructions

If the form specifies a limit, edit to it without changing the claim. The website's text download and browser printing are different outputs; choose the attachment format the employer permits rather than assuming an editable word-processing file is generated.

THE CHECK THAT MATTERS

Compare the submitted form entries with the final attachment line by line for factual consistency. A plain design helps you inspect the content, but it does not synchronize separate versions or prove that every field was completed correctly.
