THE DESIGN THINKING

A clear hierarchy.
A deliberate first impression.

The wide left edge gives the document a clear starting point. Restrained rules divide sections without turning every paragraph into a separate box. It is a useful starting layout when your story needs explanation rather than decoration.

Best suited to
Most professional applications
Content sequence
Profile → Experience → Skills → Education
Personalization focus
Keep your most recent role to three or four substantial bullets. Let older roles take less space. If the document spills onto a second page, remove repeated claims before reducing the type size.
One thing to check
A generous margin is not an invitation to make the text tiny. Open the printed output at normal size and make sure your contact line is comfortable to read.

WHEN TO CHOOSE MARGIN

Choose the layout for the story you need to tell.

Margin is a single-column layout with a generous left edge. The extra space gives headings and role entries a quiet starting point, but it also leaves less width for long lines. Try your longest job title and qualification before choosing it. If the page grows, remove duplicate duties and shorten less relevant history before shrinking the body text. This template suits a selected account of your experience; it cannot make an unedited career archive fit comfortably by changing the margins alone.

01

Work that is valuable but easy to overlook

Administrative and service responsibilities often prevent confusion rather than produce dramatic headlines. Margin can give those contributions a full sentence. Explain the information you checked, the people who used it, and the practical purpose. A modest example becomes meaningful when the reader understands the problem it addressed.

02

A straightforward professional chronology

If the history is already coherent, the layout does not need to add another visual story. Let recent roles establish current capability and use earlier work to show a foundation. Consistent dates and clear role labels help the reader follow the progression without a separate timeline graphic.

03

A draft that needs breathing room

A crowded resume may need fewer repeated claims rather than a smaller font. Margin makes that editorial choice visible. Identify the strongest contributions and give them enough space to explain their setting, while shortening older or less relevant detail that does not add a distinct qualification.

A FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

An administrator makes version control understandable

In this fictional scenario, Hannah supports a team that prepares client meetings. Her resume says she manages documents, which hides the problem she solved: colleagues sometimes used different versions of the same paper. Margin gives her room to explain the approved-material check and the handover. She keeps the example concise but includes enough context for someone outside the organization to understand its value.

THE STARTING POINT

Managed documents and provided administrative support.

A MORE USEFUL VERSION

Standardized meeting-pack filenames and version checks so colleagues could identify approved papers before client reviews, following up with owners when required material was missing.

The revision shows a practical process and its users. It identifies Hannah’s document checks while leaving approval of the underlying analysis with the responsible colleague. Margin’s open structure lets the distinction remain readable. The next bullet can demonstrate scheduling or action follow-up, giving the reader different evidence rather than several general claims that the candidate was organized and helpful.

FROM SAMPLE TO YOUR RESUME

Give every section a clear job.

01

Find the context that changes the meaning

For each contribution, ask what an outside reader would need to know: the audience, recurring problem, or approval boundary. Keep that detail close to the action. Remove background that does not affect interpretation, so the sentence remains clear without becoming an internal process manual.

02

Reduce repetition across roles

Compare bullets under different employers and identify repeated responsibilities. Keep the strongest or most recent version in detail and use earlier entries to show a distinct setting or progression. This creates room without sacrificing useful evidence or hiding the employment history.

03

Review the page at normal reading size

Check the contact line, dates, and body without zooming in. If the draft spills over, edit repeated claims before reducing text size. Inspect the print preview for an isolated heading or a split role, and save the text you want to keep before closing the browser editor.

THE FINAL EDIT

Keep the design working for your content.

01

Using whitespace as a reason to shrink text

A generous edge is part of the layout, not unused capacity that must be reclaimed. Smaller type can make an otherwise calm document uncomfortable. Select better evidence and shorten repetition before trying to force every detail from your career archive onto the page.

02

Making duties so brief they lose their purpose

A phrase such as handled records may be accurate but uninformative. Preserve the problem, check, or user that explains the contribution. Margin is useful precisely because it allows a little context; do not remove that advantage in pursuit of the shortest possible bullet.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Questions about Margin.

Is Margin suitable for a first resume?

Yes, when the content is honest and focused. Explain projects, part-time work, or volunteering with their actual settings. The open layout can give a small amount of meaningful evidence room without requiring invented experience to fill the page.

How should I handle a second page?

First check whether repeated or irrelevant detail can be removed. If the remaining context matters, inspect the page break and keep the document readable. A second page is a content decision, not automatically a failure of the layout.

Does Margin make a resume less distinctive?

The distinction can come from the work you describe. A precise contribution and clear professional focus often tell a reader more than extra decoration. Use the layout to make your evidence easy to understand rather than visually louder.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Explain a long title before shortening the evidence

Fictional practice case: Ellis holds the internal title Service Information Liaison at the fictional Elm Civic Partnership. Outside the organization, the title gives little clue that the work involves maintaining public-service guidance. Margin provides room for explanation, but the first draft spends it on a long list of office duties.

  1. 01

    Keep the official title

Retain the actual role name and add brief functional context where needed. Do not replace it with a more familiar senior title. A reader should be able to reconcile the resume with the employment record.

  2. 02

    Choose the reader-facing contribution

Describe checking service guidance with the responsible teams and updating instructions when eligibility or contact routes changed. This explains the practical purpose of the role without expecting the reader to understand the organization's terminology.

  3. 03

    Spend the margin on meaning

Keep enough words to distinguish verifying information from making policy decisions. Remove repetitive administrative tasks before shrinking the body text. The generous edge is valuable when it encourages a clear, complete explanation of otherwise obscure work.

THE CHECK THAT MATTERS

Ask someone unfamiliar with the employer what Ellis actually did. If their answer is still only liaison work, replace an internal term with a concrete action and audience rather than adding another general description of communication skills.
