TWO COLUMN / THE AXIS TEMPLATE

Axis.
A strong center of gravity.

A narrow right-hand column keeps supporting information close to the experience it complements. Axis gives the main narrative a stable left edge.

THE DESIGN THINKING

A clear hierarchy.
A deliberate first impression.

Experience follows the natural top-to-bottom reading path, while skills and education are grouped on the right. The visual divider is subtle and does not replace text labels.

Best suited to
Portfolio-led and multidisciplinary careers
Content sequence
Profile → Experience → Skills → Education
Personalization focus
Group skills into a short, relevant set. Explain multidisciplinary projects through your actual contribution rather than relying on a wide inventory of software.
One thing to check
Check that exported contact details and side-column text remain selectable in the expected order. Use a simpler layout for a form that specifies one column.

WHEN TO CHOOSE AXIS

Choose the layout for the story you need to tell.

Axis places concise supporting information to the right of the main work history. This is useful when the experience needs a continuous narrative and skills or education can remain compact. Test the balance with your own content rather than the short sample: a long qualification can make the supporting column feel crowded. Keep dates attached to the relevant job, then copy text from the exported file to inspect the order. Switch to a single-column version if the two reading paths become mixed.

01

A portfolio with several kinds of contribution

Axis can support projects where you combined interaction design, content, or research. The main column should identify which contribution you made in each case. A short supporting list can show the methods and tools behind that work without requiring every project bullet to repeat the entire inventory.

02

A specialist working across disciplines

If your strength is connecting teams, describe the decision or handoff you improved. Avoid presenting broad exposure as deep expertise in every field. The right-hand facts can establish useful breadth, while the main narrative explains the area where you took responsibility and made a substantive contribution.

03

A direct introduction with relevant work samples

A clear portfolio destination can complement the resume when it opens evidence that matches the application. Keep the project understandable without requiring the link. Axis should provide a coherent first reading, with the portfolio offering depth rather than supplying missing dates, ownership, or the basic purpose of the work.

A FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

A designer explains content and interaction together

In this fictional case, Amira works on an account setup flow and contributes both interface copy and interaction design. Her draft lists many tools but never explains how the disciplines connect. She uses Axis’s main column for a project decision and keeps the relevant methods concise on the right. The revised example shows how clearer wording and visible next steps addressed the same user problem.

THE STARTING POINT

Worked across UX, content, research, and design tools.

A MORE USEFUL VERSION

Revised account-setup labels and confirmation states after usability sessions exposed uncertainty about the next action, coordinating the changes with the interface designer and engineer.

The sentence makes the collaboration and problem visible. It does not claim that Amira alone performed every discipline or that the revision proved a universal user outcome. Axis works when this ownership is clear in the main narrative. The supporting facts can then name content design and usability research without being asked to explain the project or inflate the candidate into several unrelated specialists.

FROM SAMPLE TO YOUR RESUME

Give every section a clear job.

01

Choose a connecting professional focus

Name the kind of work that brings your disciplines together, such as product content or service design. Avoid a headline containing five separate occupations. The focus should explain why the selected experience belongs in one application, while leaving individual projects free to show different methods and collaborators.

02

Write project contributions before tools

For each important project, identify the user or business problem, your action, and the resulting decision or delivery state. Then select the supporting skills that genuinely appear in those examples. This sequence prevents the right-hand column from becoming the starting point for an unfocused inventory.

03

Compare the two reading areas

Check that the main history is understandable on its own and that supporting entries are short enough to scan. Inspect text selection or extraction after export, including the contact line. If the receiving system requires a single column, keep the edited content and choose a simpler layout for that application.

THE FINAL EDIT

Keep the design working for your content.

01

Claiming the entire project team’s work

Multidisciplinary projects make ownership easy to blur. State which research, writing, design, or implementation you performed and which came from colleagues. A clear contribution can be substantial without suggesting that one person handled the complete process independently.

02

Using the sidebar to explain career changes

A narrow supporting column is a poor place for a long explanation of your professional direction. Put the connecting idea in the profile and demonstrate it through experience. Keep the right-hand area for concise facts that support that argument.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Questions about Axis.

Is Axis only for designers?

No. It can suit other multidisciplinary backgrounds when the main narrative explains a coherent contribution and the supporting facts remain concise. The important choice is how the two reading areas divide information, not the job title alone.

How many portfolio links should I include?

Prefer a clear destination that leads to relevant, accessible work. Several competing links can clutter the contact line. Make the strongest project easy to locate and keep its role description consistent with the resume.

Can I put a long project description on the right?

That usually works against the layout’s purpose. Use the main experience narrative for context and decisions. The supporting column is better suited to short skill and education facts that a reader can consult without losing the main thread.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Keep a multidisciplinary project from becoming three different jobs

Fictional practice case: Anika is an industrial designer who also helped prepare assembly instructions for a prototype at the fictional Kestrel Workshop. Her Axis draft lists design, manufacturing, and technical writing as equally developed specialties, although the project evidence supports a narrower combination.

  1. 01

    Establish the central contribution

Use the main left column to explain the assembly problem and Anika's design revision. That gives the reader a stable professional story before they encounter the supporting capabilities in the right-hand column.

  2. 02

    Explain the adjacent work honestly

Describe illustrating the revised assembly sequence for prototype reviewers. Keep the prototype context and avoid implying that Anika developed a complete production manual or controlled manufacturing quality across a commercial product line.

  3. 03

    Make the sidebar an index

Use concise skill names that the project actually demonstrates. A long paragraph about each discipline would make the narrow column compete with the history instead of helping someone locate the relevant methods and tools.

THE CHECK THAT MATTERS

Read the main column without the sidebar. The project and Anika's responsibility should still be understandable. Then read the sidebar alone and remove any specialty that sounds broader than the evidence beside it.
