THE DESIGN THINKING

A clear hierarchy.
A deliberate first impression.

The opening allows a short bridge between past work and the target role. A conventional sequence follows, so the narrative does not hide dates or employers.

Best suited to
Career transitions and broad experience
Content sequence
Profile → Experience → Skills → Education
Personalization focus
Use the summary to name transferable work precisely. Keep official role titles intact and explain their relevance through concrete responsibilities.
One thing to check
An introduction should connect existing facts, not replace them. Make sure the experience section still carries the main argument.

WHEN TO CHOOSE HORIZON

Choose the layout for the story you need to tell.

Horizon gives a short professional profile space to explain a career connection before the chronology. It can help when the reason for your next move is not obvious from job titles alone. Name the original field and the practical overlap, then support that connection in the experience section. Keep formal titles intact. If the opening becomes a long account of your motivation, move that explanation into a letter and retain only the context needed to understand the resume’s evidence.

01

A transition with transferable work

Choose Horizon when your previous role contains relevant responsibilities that are not obvious from the title. A teacher moving toward customer education might emphasize explaining complex material and adapting guidance. Keep the original setting visible so the reader can assess the transfer rather than being asked to accept a renamed career.

02

A broad background with one target

Several industries can form a coherent story when the same useful work connects them. Identify that thread, such as service coordination or operational planning. Do not try to make every past responsibility relevant. Select examples that show the target capability and let unrelated detail become shorter.

03

A return with a clear direction

The opening can explain the professional focus you are pursuing now without making a gap the entire document. Keep dates accurate and use recent work, study, or projects when they demonstrate relevant preparation. The history should remain understandable even if the reader skips the summary.

A FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

A teacher presents customer-education evidence

In this fictional scenario, Rowan is applying for a customer-training role after teaching English. The draft replaces teacher with learning consultant, which obscures the employment record. Horizon allows a brief explanation of the transition. Rowan keeps the original title and selects an example of adapting instructional material after identifying a recurring difficulty, giving the new reader a concrete connection to training work.

THE STARTING POINT

Learning consultant with years of customer enablement experience.

A MORE USEFUL VERSION

Revised an argument-writing unit after formative checks showed difficulty selecting evidence, adding modeled comparisons and guided practice before the final assignment.

The experience remains teaching experience. Its relevance comes from diagnosing a learning need and adapting an explanation, not from pretending students were customers. Horizon’s opening can name the target direction and this transferable practice. A cover letter or interview can develop the transition further, while the resume stays grounded in work Rowan actually performed and can discuss in detail.

FROM SAMPLE TO YOUR RESUME

Give every section a clear job.

01

Write the bridge in ordinary language

State the direction you are pursuing and the real responsibilities that connect to it. Avoid claiming the target title as a past role. If the bridge requires a long paragraph of abstract skills, return to the evidence and identify the specific task or decision that makes the connection credible.

02

Select examples for their transferable action

Look for planning, explanation, investigation, coordination, or another action the new role needs. Keep the original audience and constraints. A truthful example with a visible connection is stronger than one rewritten so heavily that the former job can no longer be recognized.

03

Check the chronology independently

Read only the employers, titles, and dates. They should still form an accurate record. Then read the profile and first bullets together to check that the proposed direction is supported. The editor’s sequence remains fixed, so establish relevance through selection and wording rather than implying freely rearrangeable sections.

THE FINAL EDIT

Keep the design working for your content.

01

Using a new title to rewrite the past

A transition does not require assigning yourself the job you want before you held it. Preserve official titles and explain relevant responsibilities. The reader can recognize transferable work without being misled about the setting, seniority, or type of professional experience.

02

Making the summary do all the persuading

A polished bridge cannot compensate for unrelated bullets below it. Give the experience section the main argument. If a claim in the opening has no supporting example, revise the claim or choose a better piece of evidence rather than making the introduction longer.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Questions about Horizon.

Should I explain my whole career change here?

No. Use the resume to establish the connecting evidence and current direction. A cover letter or interview can explain motivation in more depth. Horizon’s opening should guide the reader into the work, not replace the chronology with a personal essay.

Can I include recent study?

Yes, with accurate status and relevance. A course or project can show preparation for the new direction, but it should not be presented as professional employment. Explain what you learned or delivered that adds evidence to the transition.

What if only one past role is relevant?

Give that role enough detail to make the connection clear while preserving the rest of the chronology concisely. Relevance can justify unequal space. It does not justify deleting essential dates or inventing a continuous history in the target field.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Connect a return to work with the experience that still matters

Fictional practice case: Tess is returning to paid work after a career break and targeting facilities coordination. Her previous hospitality work involved room readiness and contractor access. Her Horizon introduction currently spends most of its space explaining personal circumstances instead of showing that relevant connection.

  1. 01

    Choose the professional bridge

Open with the practical work Tess knows: coordinating access, tracking readiness, and communicating unresolved issues. Horizon's broad name line and calm introduction can establish that direction without requiring a detailed personal account of the break.

  2. 02

    Retain an understandable chronology

Keep the actual hospitality titles and dates. A brief career-break entry is an option when it clarifies the sequence, but its wording can remain general. The resume should make time understandable without demanding private detail.

  3. 03

    Distinguish recent learning from employment

If Tess completed an independent refresher project, label it accurately. Use it to demonstrate current practice, not to erase the break or create the impression of continuous paid facilities work.

THE CHECK THAT MATTERS

After reading the opening, can you predict which experience will follow? If the summary promises capabilities that the history never demonstrates, narrow the bridge and strengthen the relevant example rather than adding another assurance of readiness.
