THE DESIGN THINKING

A clear hierarchy.
A deliberate first impression.

The heading takes little space and the body has a consistent cadence. It suits a focused application with a small number of relevant roles or projects, rather than an exhaustive career archive.

Best suited to
A concise one-page story
Content sequence
Profile → Experience → Skills → Education
Personalization focus
Choose the evidence that answers this vacancy. Remove duplicate skills, repeated responsibilities, and older detail that adds no new qualification. Preserve a readable body size.
One thing to check
One page is not a universal rule. If important context is disappearing, use a longer format rather than forcing a complex career into a cramped layout.

WHEN TO CHOOSE BRIEF

Choose the layout for the story you need to tell.

Brief uses a smaller header so a focused work history can begin quickly. It suits a resume built around a few relevant roles or projects, but it is not a rule that every career must fit on one page. Keep enough context to explain your contribution and use older entries selectively. If the output overflows, look for repetition before reducing readability. Test the first and final role headings with their bullets so neither is stranded at a page boundary.

01

A focused application with a few relevant roles

If two or three experiences establish your fit, Brief can keep the story close together. Give each entry a distinct purpose. The latest role might show current capability, while an earlier one adds a different responsibility rather than repeating the same service or administrative duties.

02

A first or part-time application

A limited history can still demonstrate dependable work. Use concrete examples and accurate settings rather than filling space with a long objective. Brief’s compact structure can make a concise document feel intentional, provided you do not inflate routine responsibilities to imitate a senior resume.

03

A deliberate shorter version

You may keep a longer career archive and use Brief for a particular introduction. Select evidence for that reader while preserving essential dates and titles. The shorter version should remain an accurate professional record, not an unexplained collection of achievements detached from where and when they occurred.

A FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

A retail applicant removes repeated service claims

In this fictional scenario, Aiden has two retail jobs. The draft repeats friendly service, teamwork, and checkout duties under both. For a collection-focused role, Aiden uses Brief to keep one strong customer example and one order-accuracy example. The shorter page now shows different responsibilities rather than compressing six nearly identical bullets into smaller type.

THE STARTING POINT

Provided customer service, helped customers, and supported customer needs.

A MORE USEFUL VERSION

Prepared collection orders with item and reference checks, coordinating stock discrepancies with the stockroom team before confirming availability to customers.

The revised bullet combines a clear task with the checks and coordination that made it dependable. It does not need an invented sales result. Brief gains space because repetition is removed, not because the text is made harder to read. Aiden can use the second role to show a different contribution, such as trusted opening duties, giving the short history more useful range.

FROM SAMPLE TO YOUR RESUME

Give every section a clear job.

01

Identify the vacancy’s central needs

Choose the responsibilities that matter most and match each to real evidence. Keep the examples that answer those needs. This gives a reason for every line and makes it easier to remove unrelated detail without treating brevity as an arbitrary exercise in deleting words.

02

Remove duplicate claims before shortening sentences

Compare bullets within and across roles. If two demonstrate the same capability, retain the one with clearer context or stronger relevance. Then edit the remaining wording. This sequence preserves meaning better than making every sentence shorter while leaving the same repetition underneath.

03

Check whether one page still serves the story

Inspect the preview at a comfortable reading size. If essential context disappears or the page becomes cramped, choose a more spacious or longer document. Save the selected text separately so you can compare versions without losing the fuller evidence you may need for another application.

THE FINAL EDIT

Keep the design working for your content.

01

Treating one page as a hiring rule

The useful length depends on the experience and application. Brief supports a concise story, but it cannot make a complex history fit responsibly through compression alone. Keep enough context for the reader to understand scope, dates, and the basis of important claims.

02

Deleting the details that distinguish your work

Removing every audience, constraint, or purpose can leave short but generic bullets. Cut repetition and irrelevant background first. A few extra words that explain a real responsibility may add more value than another vague skill or an additional line of self-description.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Questions about Brief.

What should I cut first?

Start with repeated responsibilities, generic adjectives, and older detail that adds no distinct qualification. Preserve accurate titles, dates, and the context needed to interpret important examples. Concision should make the evidence clearer rather than merely make the document shorter.

Can an experienced applicant use Brief?

Yes, for a focused application that can be supported by selected evidence. Keep the chronology understandable and use a longer version when important scope would otherwise disappear. The layout is a choice about presentation, not a limit on career seniority.

Should I shorten contact information?

Keep reliable contact details and only useful links. Remove clutter, not information the recipient needs. Check the final line for wrapping and verify every address or destination before sending the document.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Choose between two relevant examples when space is tight

Fictional practice case: Nico has a café job and a volunteering role with the fictional Orchard Food Collective. Both include handling enquiries. He is preparing Brief for an inventory-assistant vacancy, but his draft gives most of the page to two similar service stories.

  1. 01

    Identify what each example adds

Keep the café example that demonstrates checking deliveries against an order. Use the volunteering entry for organizing stored supplies or reporting a discrepancy if that reflects Nico's work. Together, the entries now show different relevant responsibilities.

  2. 02

    Cut repetition before explanation

Remove one general customer-service bullet rather than stripping the detail from the stock-check example. Brief can fit a focused story because the evidence is selected, not because every sentence is reduced to a few ambiguous words.

  3. 03

Know when the page is complete

A short profile, the two useful entries, concise skills, and accurate education may be enough. Do not add unrelated material solely to fill the lower page or make an early career resemble a longer one.

THE CHECK THAT MATTERS

Assign each surviving bullet a distinct reason for inclusion. If two sentences prove the same thing in nearly the same setting, retain the stronger one. If essential context still cannot fit comfortably, allow another page or choose a roomier layout.
