THE DESIGN THINKING

A clear hierarchy.
A deliberate first impression.

The side panel can hold a compact set of tools and education while the main text explains projects, clients, or roles. The separation helps readers understand which items are evidence and which are supporting facts.

Keep client work attributed accurately and label independent projects clearly. Use only information you have permission to share. Check the text order after export.
One thing to check
If an application parser scrambles the columns, switch to Margin or Ledger. No layout can promise identical behavior across every application system.

WHEN TO CHOOSE FIELDNOTE

Choose the layout for the story you need to tell.

Fieldnote separates concise supporting details from the main account of varied work. It can be useful for a history involving projects, clients or changing assignments, provided the relationship is labeled accurately. Do not turn each client into a separate employer if the work was freelance or delivered through an agency. Keep dates and engagement context together in the main entries. Review the narrow column with your longest supporting item, and test the extracted text order before using the layout for a portal submission.

01

Freelance work with distinct engagements

Fieldnote can organize independent work when each selected project has a clear context and contribution. Explain whether the client engaged you directly or through another organization where relevant. Keep the work attributed accurately and avoid presenting a collection of short assignments as several simultaneous full-time positions.

02

A project-based career with a common practice

A designer, consultant, or coordinator may work across sectors while using a consistent method. Name that professional thread in the opening and show how it appeared in different projects. The supporting area can identify the recurring toolkit, leaving the main narrative to explain the actual problems.

03

A direct introduction to a potential client

The layout can help a person compare relevant projects with supporting facts. Choose examples that resemble the work being discussed, while keeping the resume understandable without a portfolio. Use only material and client information you are permitted to share, with a clear description when names are omitted.

A FICTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

A freelance consultant clarifies overlapping projects

In this fictional scenario, Elise worked on two short operations projects during the same quarter. Her draft lists both client names as employers with no explanation. She uses Fieldnote to identify the independent-work context and describe one project’s contribution. The dates can overlap honestly because the relationship is now clear, and the sidebar no longer carries long paragraphs explaining the career structure.

THE STARTING POINT

Operations Manager at Client A and Client B during the same period.

A MORE USEFUL VERSION

Independent operations consultant: mapped a client’s request-to-delivery handoff, clarifying missing approvals and preparing a revised ownership guide for the team’s review.

The revision identifies an engagement and the work delivered without inventing a management appointment. It also distinguishes a proposal prepared for review from a change already implemented. Fieldnote can make a varied portfolio coherent when these facts are clear in the main column. The supporting panel then adds concise tools and education rather than being asked to explain overlapping jobs or repair ambiguous attribution.

FROM SAMPLE TO YOUR RESUME

Give every section a clear job.

01

Choose an accurate engagement structure

Decide whether to describe a period of independent work with selected projects or separate clearly labeled contracts. Preserve client relationships and dates accurately. The choice should help the reader understand how the work occurred, not make the history appear more continuous or senior than it was.

02

Give each project a different reason to appear

Select projects that show distinct problems, methods, or responsibility. Avoid repeating the same service description for every client. Explain the contribution and delivery state, then use the supporting list for recurring capabilities that do not need to be defined again in each entry.

03

Check the narrative and extraction together

Read the main column for a coherent professional thread, then inspect the exported text order around the side panel. Confirm that project dates and labels remain associated. If the destination handles columns poorly, use a single-column version while keeping the same clear engagement descriptions.

THE FINAL EDIT

Keep the design working for your content.

01

Hiding the type of relationship

A client, agency, employer, and personal project are different contexts. State the relevant relationship so a reader can assess responsibility. A polished project list should not imply employment, management authority, or a direct client relationship that did not exist.

02

Using variety as a reason to include everything

A broad portfolio can overwhelm the application when every engagement receives equal detail. Choose projects that support the present direction and retain a separate archive. The side panel should not become a place to store every tool, course, or unrelated service you have offered.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Questions about Fieldnote.

How should overlapping freelance dates appear?

Keep the dates accurate and label the independent or contract context clearly. Overlap can be normal in project work. The resume should explain the structure rather than changing dates to imitate a sequence of full-time jobs.

Can I omit a confidential client name?

Yes, when you describe the permitted context and your contribution accurately. Use a general sector or project description where appropriate. Do not invent a substitute client or disclose details that identify a private engagement indirectly.

Should every project have a portfolio link?

Only add links that provide useful, shareable evidence. A clear destination with selected relevant work may be easier to navigate than many competing addresses. The resume should still explain each project’s purpose and your role without requiring a click.

PUT THE IDEA TO WORK

Explain an agency assignment without naming the wrong employer

Fictional practice case: Ada completed a short documentation assignment at the fictional Cedar Housing Group through the fictional Threadline Agency. Her Fieldnote draft lists the client as her permanent employer and includes confidential project details to make the engagement sound substantial.

  1. 01

    Clarify the relationship

Describe the assignment in a way that distinguishes the agency arrangement from the client organization. Keep the engagement dates accurate. Fieldnote can organize varied work, but the main narrative must explain what kind of work relationship each entry represents.

  2. 02

    Describe an appropriate deliverable

Explain producing an internal process guide from interviews and existing records, with review by the responsible team. Avoid client data or sensitive operational details; the method and deliverable can show contribution without reproducing the underlying material.

  3. 03

    Use the side panel sparingly

Keep tools and education concise. Do not put the agency explanation in small sidebar text while the main entry makes a misleading claim. The relationship belongs beside the work it qualifies.

THE CHECK THAT MATTERS

Read the employment entry as though you were checking the arrangement with the agency. The client, assignment period, and responsibility should agree with the actual record, while the example should remain useful without revealing confidential specifics.
